Looking for a Cat or Kitten
If you have decided that the time is right for you to have a new cat or kitten, this section will help you to find what you are looking for and give advice on taking the right steps to find a suibable cat ro kitten.
Finding a reputable breeder might seem to be a daunting task if you have never bought a pedigree cat before, we hold a list of Maine Coon Cat Club breeders who have agreed to abide by the GCCF Code of Ethics which gives details on the expectations of owners and breeders.
The GCCF strongly recommends that no kitten should be permitted to go to a new home before 13 weeks of age. At least seven days prior to this the kitten should have completed a full course of vaccinations, including a health check, given by a Veterinary Surgeon or by a listed Veterinary Nurse under the direction of a Veterinary Surgeon. The breeder should ensure that kittens are housetrained, inoculated and in good general health.
The Maine Coon Cat Club Kitten List is updated weekly, it gives details of Maine Coon Cat Club listed breeders who have let us know that they have kittens for sale. There is also a full list of club breeders based around the UK. We also offer support with rehoming/rescuing older cats in need. Follow the links below to view kittens, breeders and rehoming.
The GCCF has an excellent section on their website about Getting a Cat which includes everything from information about the different breeds, advice on finding a kitten, bringing your kitten home and caring for your cat.
You may decide that you would rather adopt an older cat instead of buying a young kitten. Whilst the club does not get involved in rehoming ex-breeding cats, we do offer a rescue/rehome service for cats seeking new homes. The reasons for rehoming may not be due to an issue with the cat, often it is as a result of a change in their owners' personal circumstances. We update our welfare/rehome page (Older cats looking for Homes) each time a cat is added or removed from the list. Please check the welfare page regularly if you are interested in taking on an older cat.
