Evaluating Cats for Showing or Breeding in GCCF
Whilst many people may not wish to show or breed, anyone who has an interest in what judges and breeders look for, will be interested in this article. Even if your Maine Coon is just your pet, this article will help you to pick out your Maine Coon's good points.
Breeders may advertise "pet quality" or "show quality" kittens for sale and you may well ask "what is the difference between the two?" It may come down to something as simple as the nose has a small bump, the chin could be a little firmer, the tail is just a little too short or the coat pattern isn't clear enough. None of these will aftect the cat in any way, but it does mean that they may not be very successful on the show bench.
Many breeders sell some kittens as pets even though they are good enough to show, a loving home is more important than making sure that their top quality kittens are seen on the show bench.
Some people buy a Maine Coon as a pet and end up showing it - breeders will be supportive if you are thinking of having a go at showing - they should be able to advise you if the cat has show potential - although show wins can never be guaranteed by anyone.
